Dr Shahzad Sarwar is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby. He has been a consultant since 2013 and is Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital. He has extensive experience in inflammatory bowel disease and in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and treats the full range of upper and lower digestive conditions.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a long game. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are conditions people live with for decades, and the difference between managing them well and managing them badly is measured in years of ordinary life. Dr Sarwar looks after a large cohort of IBD patients in his NHS practice, which is the sort of experience that shows in the details: knowing when to change treatment, when to investigate, and when to leave things alone.

About Dr Sarwar

Dr Sarwar obtained his undergraduate medical qualification from Allama Iqbal Medical College, affiliated to the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan. He was awarded his Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the Irish Committee for Higher Medical Training at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2011.

He joined Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby as a full-time Consultant Gastroenterologist in 2013, and serves as Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology at the trust.

His main specialist interest is inflammatory bowel disease, developed through his training and through managing a large cohort of IBD patients. Alongside this he treats indigestion, difficulty swallowing, Barrett’s oesophagus, peptic ulcer disease, functional bowel conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatic conditions and a range of liver and biliary disorders.

He has extensive experience in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. His therapeutic upper GI work includes endoscopic treatment of oesophageal and gastric varices using band ligation, sclerotherapy and Histoacryl glue, dilatation of oesophageal strictures, endoscopic treatment of bleeding peptic ulcers, and the insertion of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding tubes and naso-jejunal tubes. In the lower bowel he performs diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy including snare polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection and treatment of angiodysplasia with argon plasma coagulation.
