Ultrasound Guided Injections

Ultrasound Guided Injections at St Hugh’s Hospital - Targeted treatment, exactly where it’s needed.

If you’re dealing with ongoing joint or muscle pain, ultrasound guided injections can be a simple and effective way to get relief.

By using real-time imaging, we can see exactly where the problem is and guide the injection directly to it.

What is an Ultrasound-guided injection?

It’s a procedure where we use ultrasound imaging to guide a small needle to the precise area causing your pain.

This helps us treat the right spot, first time.

Depending on your condition, the injection may include:

– A steroid to reduce inflammation

– Local anaesthetic for short-term relief

– Other treatments such as PRP (if appropriate)

What can it help with?

We commonly use these injections for:

– Shoulder pain (including frozen shoulder or tendon problems)

– Hip pain

– Knee pain

– Arthritis

– Tennis or golfer’s elbow

– Tendon injuries

– General joint or soft tissue pain

If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, we’ll talk it through during your consultation.

Why use ultrasound?

In short – accuracy matters.

Using ultrasound means:

– We can see exactly where the needle is going

– The medication is delivered to the right place

– It’s generally more comfortable and effective

What happens on the day?

The whole process is straightforward and usually takes around ** – ** minutes.

– We’ll start by assessing the area and confirming the plan

– Your skin is cleaned, and ultrasound gel is applied

– We use the ultrasound scanner to locate the exact spot

– A fine needle is guided into the position using the scan

– The injection is given

What about recovery?

You can usually go straight home after the injection. Please be aware that you might feel a little sore for a day or two.

How long do the effects last?

This depends on the condition being treated. Some people get relief for weeks or months, others may need further treatment.

Will I need more than one injection?

Not always. Some patients only need one, while others may benefit from a series depending on their condition.
