Consultant Ophthalmologist

Mr Sakkaf Aftab is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, specialising in medical and surgical retina and in refractive cataract surgery. He is one of a small number of ophthalmologists in the UK to have completed fellowship training in both medical and surgical retina, and he is a College Tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He has been a consultant since 2002, when he started the vitreoretinal service at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

The retina is the part of the eye that lets us see, and when it goes wrong, the effects are not subtle. Straight lines that bend, a blur in the middle of your vision, or sight that has quietly declined in one eye without you noticing. A good deal of retinal disease is now treatable, and with most of it the outcome depends heavily on how early it is caught. That’s why a change in vision should be assessed rather than left to settle.

About Mr Aftab

Mr Aftab holds MBBS, membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He completed a fellowship in Medical and Surgical Retina at the Centre for Eye Research Australia in Melbourne, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. He is one of a small number of ophthalmologists in the UK to have completed fellowship training in both medical and surgical retina, which are usually separate paths.

He was appointed as a consultant with a special interest in medical and surgical retina at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust in 2002, where he started the vitreoretinal service and set up one of the first photodynamic therapy centres in the UK for age-related macular degeneration. He also helped establish the diabetic retinal screening service across the East Riding of Yorkshire and South Humberside. He has introduced sutureless posterior segment eye surgery to the area.

His clinical practice covers the management of wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion, and vitreoretinal surgery for conditions including macular holes, epiretinal membrane and vitreous haemorrhage.

Alongside retinal work, he performs small incision cataract surgery under topical anaesthesia, meaning drops rather than an injection around the eye, and has a particular interest in refractive cataract surgery using multifocal and toric intraocular lens implants. He also provides medical and surgical treatment for glaucoma and the full range of general adult eye conditions.

He is a College Tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the College’s CESR Faculty, having previously chaired its Continuing Professional Development subcommittee and served on its Education Committee. He sits on his trust’s management board, chairs its Hospital Consultant Committee, and has been awarded the maximum of nine Local NHS Clinical Excellence Awards.

He maintains an active research interest, currently in diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion, and has been invited to lecture at international meetings. He is a member of the European Society of Retina Specialists, the British and European Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons, the European and American Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
