Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon

Mr Ashutosh Kotwal is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby. He is Clinical Lead for the Department of Plastic Surgery at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, a Council member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, and Regional Speciality Advisor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons. His specialist interests include breast surgery and reconstruction, skin cancer and melanoma surgery, and microvascular surgery.

About Mr Kotwal

Mr Kotwal was born and brought up in Nagpur, India, where he qualified in medicine and completed postgraduate training in general surgery. He came to the UK in 2002 and completed his Higher Plastic Surgical Training here, gaining his FRCS in Plastic Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010.

He undertook fellowships in reconstructive breast surgery at Chelmsford and in microvascular surgery at Leeds. Microvascular surgery involves reconnecting blood vessels under a microscope, and it is the technique that makes complex reconstruction possible after cancer surgery or major trauma.

He is Clinical Lead for the Department of Plastic Surgery at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Governance Lead for the trust’s Major Trauma Centre.

Outside his own hospital he is a Council member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, and Regional Specialty Advisor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons. He is a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international meetings, and is an educational supervisor and appraiser.

His approach is to tailor treatment to the individual rather than apply a standard plan, and he places particular value on his patients’ own assessment of their care.
