Mr Mathew Thomas
MBBS, MRCS, FRCS (Urol)
Consultant Urologist
Mr Mathew Thomas is a Consultant Urologist at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby. He has been a consultant since 2013 and specialises in kidney stone treatment, benign prostate disease including TURP and Greenlight laser surgery, bladder dysfunction and urological cancer investigation. He trained in urology in the Mersey region and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Urology.
Urology problems tend to be the ones people sit on. A stone that keeps coming back, a prostate that has been making nights miserable for two years, a bladder that dictates where you can go and for how long. Mr Thomas offers rapid diagnosis and a treatment plan built around the individual rather than a standard pathway, and his approach to what are often awkward conversations is straightforward and unembarrassed.
About Mr Thomas
Mr Thomas completed his urology training in the Mersey region and has worked as a consultant urologist in North Lincolnshire since 2013. He holds MBBS, MRCS and FRCS in Urology, and is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons.
He has held a series of senior leadership roles. He has been clinical lead of the urology department and Divisional Medical Director for surgery, and he is currently Chief of Service for Speciality Surgery, a role that covers urology services across the whole of the Humber.
His clinical specialisms are kidney stone treatment, or endourology, benign prostate disorder management including TURP and Greenlight laser surgery, and urological cancer diagnostic investigation. He also treats peno-scrotal disorders, erectile dysfunction and bladder dysfunction, including bladder Botox injections for an overactive bladder, recurrent urinary tract infections and cystitis. Female urology and incontinence have been a significant part of his practice throughout his consultant career.
He performs a range of diagnostic investigations himself, including cystoscopy, urodynamics and prostate biopsy, including transperineal biopsy, a technique that reaches the prostate through the skin rather than the bowel wall and carries a lower risk of infection than the older approach.
Mr Thomas offers a personalised, sensitive and comprehensive service, with rapid diagnosis, specialist treatment using current techniques, and a bespoke treatment plan for each patient.
