Mr Ibrahim Bolaji is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecological Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby. He has been a consultant since 1997 and specialises in fertility problems, endometriosis, fibroids, heavy and irregular periods, pelvic pain and minimally invasive keyhole surgery. He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Hull York Medical School and an examiner for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Gynaecological problems are rarely just physical. Heavy bleeding, ongoing pelvic pain or difficulty conceiving affect work, relationships and confidence, and many women have been living with the problem for years before they ask for help. Mr Bolaji is known by his patients for taking the time to listen properly and explain things clearly, and for setting out every option rather than heading straight for surgery.

About Mr Bolaji

Mr Bolaji qualified in medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan in Nigeria, and completed his general training in obstetrics and gynaecology in London and Newcastle upon Tyne. He was first appointed as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in 1997.

Before that, he worked as a research fellow in reproductive endocrinology with the Reproductive Hormone and Fertility Group at University College Galway in Ireland, where his research developed a non-isotopic enzyme immunoassay for salivary progesterone and applied it clinically in infertility and menopause. He went on to be awarded a Doctor of Medicine by the National University of Ireland. He also holds a Master of Laws in Medical Law and Ethics from De Montfort University and a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from Hull York Medical School.

His clinical practice centres on subfertility and minimally invasive surgery. He is a trained gynaecological laparoscopist, experienced in laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy and in fertility-preserving surgery, meaning surgery planned around protecting a woman’s chances of conceiving in future. His other special interests include acute gynaecology and early pregnancy problems, including recurrent miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Bolaji is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Hull York Medical School and an examiner for the MRCOG Part 3 clinical examination with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, where he also holds a Tier 3 Medical Educator role. He has served as Lead Consultant in Subfertility and as Divisional Clinical Governance Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, and has acted as a Clinical and Professional Advisor to the Care Quality Commission.

He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and contributed chapters to a number of medical textbooks. He was president of the Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain from 2018 to 2021.
