Mr Dakshinamurthy Sunderamoorthy is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, specialising in foot and ankle surgery. He completed a foot and ankle fellowship at Leeds University Teaching Hospitals and a post-CCT senior fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty at Great Western Hospital in Swindon. He has been a consultant since 2012, was the first specialist foot and ankle surgeon appointed at both Scunthorpe and Goole hospitals, and has held practising privileges at St Hugh’s since 2015. He also performs knee replacement and knee arthroscopy.

Feet are complicated. Twenty-six bones, thirty-three joints, and a job that involves carrying your entire weight several thousand times a day. When something in the middle or the back of the foot goes wrong, the effects travel: the way you walk changes, then your knee complains, then your back. A good deal of foot and ankle surgery is about restoring the mechanics rather than simply treating the painful spot.

About Mr Sunderamoorthy

Mr Sunderamoorthy graduated from Madras Medical College in Chennai in 1995 and undertook further training in India before moving to the UK in 1998. He completed his basic surgical training in South Wales, gaining MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000, and trained as a Specialist Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the Mersey Deanery.

He was awarded a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Leeds University Teaching Hospitals under Mr Nick Harris, followed by a post-CCT senior fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty at Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

He has been on the GMC Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedics since 2010, and has worked at Royal Derby Hospital, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, Nottingham University Hospitals and Leeds University Teaching Hospitals. He became a substantive consultant at Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole and District Hospital in 2012, where he was the first specialist foot and ankle surgeon appointed at either site.

He performs a wide range of forefoot, midfoot and hindfoot procedures, covering arthritis, deformity correction including flat foot and high arched foot, bunions and lesser toe problems, tendon and ligament injuries, and foot and ankle sports injuries. He also performs total knee replacement and knee arthroscopy, and works within multidisciplinary teams managing diabetic foot problems and hip fractures.

He is active in research and has published in peer-reviewed journals, including several papers on Morton’s neuroma, alongside book chapters on lower limb surgery. He regularly conducts audit and quality improvement projects and presents at national and international meetings. He is involved in the training of registrars and is an examiner for the Hull York Medical School MBBS.

He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the British Trauma Society, SICOT and the British Medical Association.
