Mr Prasad Antapur is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, specialising in hip and knee replacement. His practice covers complex primary and revision joint replacement, minimally invasive techniques, knee arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction, and trauma. He completed advanced fellowships in Toronto and in Birmingham, Alabama, and is Head of Service for trauma and orthopaedics at his NHS trust.

What distinguishes his practice is the emphasis on what happens after the operation. Joint replacement used to mean several days in hospital and a long, cautious recovery. Mr Antapur’s work has focused on changing that, using minimally invasive approaches and modern pain relief so that patients are up and moving the same day. About Mr Antapur

Mr Antapur completed his registrar training in the Wessex region before undertaking advanced fellowships in Toronto in Canada, in Birmingham, Alabama in the United States, and in Southampton. He holds MBBS, MRCS from Glasgow and FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics from Glasgow. In recognition of his experience, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh awarded him an Honorary Fellowship.

He specialises in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement. Revision surgery, where a previous joint replacement needs to be redone, is technically demanding work that not every orthopaedic surgeon takes on. Alongside this he performs knee arthroscopy and arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, and treats trauma.

He offers current joint replacement technology including hip resurfacing, patient-specific implants and high-flexion knee replacements, as well as unicompartmental knee replacement, where only the worn part of the knee is resurfaced.

Minimally invasive hip replacement is a particular focus. He performs the Superpath approach, a technique that works between the muscles rather than cutting through them, which is associated with less post-operative pain and a faster return to walking. He was the surgeon behind a UK first at Grantham and District Hospital, performing double keyhole hip replacement surgery.

He is equally focused on enhanced recovery after joint replacement, using modern post-operative pain relief techniques that allow patients to mobilise on the same day as their surgery. He has been interviewed by NHS England as part of identifying best practice, supervises lower limb arthroplasty fellows, and presents regularly at regional, national and international meetings, having lectured in the UK, Bahrain, Australia, India and Dubai. He is well published in the field.
