Professor Rohit Rambani
MBBS, MS, MRCS, FRCS (Tr & Orth), FIMSA, PhD, PGCert (Research and Training)
Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon (Hip & Knee)
Professor Rohit Rambani is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, specialising in hip and knee surgery. His practice covers primary and revision hip and knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, and ligament reconstruction, including ACL, PCL, MPFL and multi-ligament surgery. He is Honorary Professor and Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Lincoln, Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics at United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals, and holds three national roles in the evaluation and safety monitoring of joint replacement implants.
Choosing a joint replacement involves a decision most patients never see: which implant. There are hundreds on the market, and they are not equivalent, which is why the NHS maintains registries and evaluation panels to track how each one performs over time. Professor Rambani sits on those panels. He also has a particular interest in the opposite question, which is how to preserve a knee rather than replace it, particularly in younger and more active patients.

About Professor Rambani
Professor Rambani graduated in medicine from Panjab University in India and completed his postgraduate MS in Orthopaedics in India before moving to England. He gained MRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006 and FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2011, and is a Fellow of the International Medical Sciences Academy.
His basic training in hip and knee surgery and reconstruction was in Yorkshire, followed by three fellowships: a knee fellowship at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, the Avon arthroplasty fellowship at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, and the Alan Gross limb reconstruction fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, which is among the best known fellowships in revision hip and knee surgery.
He was awarded a PhD by the University of Hull in simulation and computer sciences, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Research and Training.
He is Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics at United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
His practice covers primary and revision hip and knee replacement, soft tissue conditions of the knee with a focus on knee preservation, and hip and knee arthroscopy. He treats sports and skiing knee injuries, and performs arthroscopic surgery for meniscal cartilage problems and ligament reconstruction, including anterior and posterior cruciate ligament, MPFL and multi-ligament reconstruction. He has worked extensively on enhanced recovery after joint replacement.
Academic and national roles. He is Honorary Professor and Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Lincoln and Lincoln Medical School, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds, and a Visiting Professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh.
He is a panel member of ODEP, the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel, which independently rates the evidence behind hip and knee implants used in the UK. He is a regional clinical coordinator for the National Joint Registry, and sits on the advisory board for Beyond Compliance, the national scheme monitoring the safe introduction of new orthopaedic implants.
He has published more than thirty research articles in peer-reviewed journals and written seven book chapters, sits on the editorial boards of several journals and reviews for leading orthopaedic titles. He has also published a book on the boot camp approach to surgical training. His research interests include arthroscopic techniques for sports injuries, uncemented hip and knee implant technology, new bearing surfaces, and outcomes assessment in hip, knee and revision arthroplasty.
