Mr Iain Chambers is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby. He specialises in hip and knee replacement, including complex hip revision surgery, and also treats lower limb arthritis, bunions, carpal tunnel syndrome and a wide range of general orthopaedic conditions. He has been a consultant since 2007 and works across Goole and Scunthorpe hospitals for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

Most people who come to see Mr Chambers have reached the point where pain is dictating what they can and cannot do. Walking the dog, getting up the stairs, sleeping through the night. His first job is to work out exactly what is causing it, and his second is to be straight with you about whether surgery is the right answer yet. Plenty of patients are helped without an operation, and where surgery is the right step, he will talk you through what it involves and what recovery genuinely looks like.

About Mr Chambers

Mr Chambers qualified from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1994, then took up basic surgical training in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999, and went on to complete his higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics on a northern England rotation, gaining his FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2005.

In 2006 he completed a fellowship at the University of Toronto in lower limb joint replacement and trauma, one of the leading international centres for this work. He was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2007 and joined Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust the same year.

Hip and knee replacement remains the core of his practice, including hip revision surgery for patients whose previous replacement needs to be redone. This is technically demanding work that not every orthopaedic surgeon takes on, and it sits alongside a broad general orthopaedic caseload covering lower limb arthritis, arthroscopy, bunions, carpal tunnel syndrome and hand surgery.

His research interests reflect the same focus. He has a particular interest in the longevity of hip replacements, and in the audit and quality control of joint replacement surgery, which is to say how long a new joint lasts and how consistently good results are delivered. Both feed directly back into how he advises patients on timing and implant choice.
