Mr Aravind Desai is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery. He completed an upper limb fellowship at Wrightington Hospital, treats sports injuries, arthritis and complex trauma of the shoulder and elbow, and performs most of his procedures by keyhole surgery under regional anaesthetic. He is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association.

Shoulder surgery has changed considerably in recent years, and much of the change is about how it is done rather than what is done. Keyhole techniques, regional anaesthetic rather than a general, and going home the same day mean the experience is quite different from the one most people picture. Mr Desai’s practice is built around that approach, and around getting an accurate diagnosis in clinic rather than after a wait for imaging.

About Mr Desai

Mr Desai completed his orthopaedic training in India, gaining MS in Orthopaedics, before undertaking higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics with the Northern Deanery in Newcastle, where he developed his special interest in the shoulder and elbow. He holds MRCS, an MSc in Trauma and Orthopaedics from the University of Central Lancashire, an MCh in Trauma and Orthopaedics from Edge Hill University, and FRCS in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

He went on to complete his specialist upper limb fellowship at Wrightington Hospital, an internationally recognised upper limb centre, where he trained in both soft tissue and arthroplasty procedures including revision shoulder and elbow replacement.

He is a Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder Surgeon with Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, based at Grimsby and Goole.

His special interests are sports injuries of the shoulder and elbow, including rotator cuff tears, instability and impingement, along with arthritis and complex trauma. He also performs shoulder and elbow joint replacement, including reverse shoulder replacement.

He performs most of his procedures by keyhole surgery under regional anaesthetic rather than a general anaesthetic, and is developing pathways in awake surgery, day case surgery, enhanced recovery and ultrasound assessment within his own clinics so that patients can be scanned and assessed in the same appointment.

He is active in audit and research, with more than thirty publications, several book chapters and more than fifty presentations at national and international meetings. He teaches on orthopaedic courses and is involved in training junior doctors and medical students.
