Mr Jose Bunola is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby. He is a general orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in knee surgery, covering knee replacement, keyhole surgery, ligament reconstruction and trauma. He also works for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Knee problems fall into two rough camps. There is the wear-and-tear kind that builds up over years until stairs and long walks become a negotiation, and there is the sudden kind, where a twist on a football pitch or a bad landing does the damage in a second. Mr Bunola treats both, and the approach differs. For arthritis it is about timing an operation well and not doing it a moment sooner than it is warranted. For a ligament injury it is about restoring stability so you can get back to what you were doing.

About Mr Bunola

Mr Bunola is originally from Majorca and qualified in medicine at the University of Barcelona. He came to England shortly after qualifying and completed all his orthopaedic training here, in London and Yorkshire. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and holds the FRCS in Orthopaedics.

After gaining his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training, he undertook further post-CCST training in knee arthroscopy and soft tissue knee reconstruction as a recognised Fellow at Bradford Royal Infirmary. That fellowship is what underpins the ligament and soft tissue side of his practice today.

His knee work covers total knee replacement, unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement, ligament reconstruction including anterior and posterior cruciate ligament surgery, and arthroscopic keyhole procedures. Alongside the knee, he maintains a general orthopaedic and trauma practice and is happy to see general orthopaedic referrals.
