Mr Carl Fenton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, specialising in lower limb surgery. He performs primary and revision hip replacement, total and partial knee replacement, and arthroscopic knee surgery. He completed a specialist fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, including training in robotic hip and knee replacement, and holds an MSc from the University of Edinburgh.

Joint replacement has become a routine operation, which is precisely why the details matter. Which implant, which approach, whether a partial replacement would serve you better than a total one, and above all whether now is the right time. Mr Fenton’s fellowship was at one of the highest-volume arthroplasty units in the UK, and the value of that kind of training shows less in the straightforward cases than in the ones that are not.

About Mr Fenton

Mr Fenton trained at Hull York Medical School, qualifying in 2008, and completed his specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Yorkshire rotation. He holds an MSc from the University of Edinburgh and gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2020.

He then completed a specialist fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland’s national elective centre and one of the highest-volume joint replacement units in the UK. The fellowship included training in robotic hip and knee replacement.

Alongside his elective practice he has a busy trauma surgery practice with Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, with a particular interest in fractures around existing hip replacements, known as periprosthetic fractures. These are technically demanding to treat, because the fracture has to be managed around an implant that is already in place.

He publishes regularly, takes an active interest in service and quality improvement, and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor, training other doctors to manage major traumatic injuries.

Outside work he is a keen motorcyclist and works as a medic at the Isle of Man TT races.
